The opportunity to try out new sports with links to local clubs has been made possible through this new initiative headed by the premier league football clubs as part of the government’s vision of a legacy coming out of the 2012 Olympics.  Working in conjunction with Middlesbrough Football club in the community partnerships have been agreed with five local clubs, Marske Volley Ball Club, Middlesbrough Volleyball Club,  Ormseby Table Tennis Club, Thornaby Badminton Club and Redcar Judo Club. Each of the clubs will set up 4 satellite clubs, with Volleyball being split between the two clubs Middlesbrough and Marske, each setting up two satellite clubs.  The outcome of this incentive is to increase participation long term within a club environment.  With a target figure nationally, of 30,000 young people being involved over the period of the project, which is 2 ½ years the sports are nationally agreed and all premier league clubs will work with these other sports to help with their development, based on their experience of working with the community and best practice.  Development of the sports will initially be local to their own clubs so that transition is easy and low cost.  The project kick starts in September this year with a Media Day planned for October.
Coordinating all of this project on behalf of the football club is Alan Cawthorne, who has a history in the sport of Judo both at local level, as a coach and extensively as a volunteer with the governing body regionally over the last 18 years.
Anybody wanting information on any of these sports can contact Alan on 01642- 282128 Extn. 1852 or by looking at the website links provided.
The project works alongside many of our School sport Partnerships who will facilitate access to potential new players in each of the sports.
