Welcome to Football First
Football First is a vibrant and active department of Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community and the aim is to educate and promote positive lifestyle messages using the medium of football.
Football First has many programmes on offer, each of which can be individually tailored to meet personal needs and requirements. Our teaching facilities and computer suite are specially designed to enable students to learn in a relaxed, non-traditional teaching environment. We have a dedicated team of highly qualified teaching specialists.
Creating Chances
Football First Entry to Employment students and Middlesbrough players Luke Young and Andrew Taylor arrived last week to take part in a Creating Chances event, part of the Premier leagues initiative to showcase the good work done by many football clubs and players in the local community.
A big thanks to Erimus Housing for providing various construction activities which both the players and the students enjoyed.
The players showed good team work skills as a blindfolded Luke Young was guided around an obstacle course by his team mate Andrew Taylor. Luke and Andrew were good sports and took part in various other challenges including "The Price is Right Ready Steady Cook."
The event was a hugh success and enjoyed by everyone players, students, staff and the local and national media who came along.
Luke Young’s cooking was voted the best on the day by the students and he also won the price is right, never mind Andrew there is always next year.
FC Galaxy crash to opening day defeat
MFCiC’s e2e team – FC Galaxy of Middlesbrough, slumped to a dissapointing defeat on the opening day of the new season.
Galaxy found themselves 2-0 down after 10 minutes, playing with a man down with defender Wayne Hughes mising the game.
A brave fightback and a great team move saw Anth Garbutt claw a goal back with a good left footed finish before they were awarded a life line with a penalty kick.
Newly appointed penalty taker, Jamie Büte kept up his 100% record with a calm finish past the keeper to pull level. The game seemed destined for a draw until, in the last 5 minutes of play some poor play from Galaxy saw the opposition awarded 2 spot kicks.
Anth Garbutt, captain said, "It was a good game, with a man down we were really pushed to our limits and I can hardly breathe im so tired but we nearly hung on. I guess a draw might have flattered us a little, they were a great team but we did what was needed and we sat back, defended well and hit them on the break. Im dissapointed with how we collapsed at the end but the lads gave 100% so we can hold our heads up."
The loss means FC Galaxy must look to pick up some points quickly if they are to survive in what looks like a very competitive league this year.

John Owens
Michael Dorgan with John Owens on residential.
John Owens was a young football loving teenager from Thornaby.
He played for many teams, and was in fact, the only white person to play for a multi-cultural team in Stockton. John also attended the Football First Programme and was a shining example to all. Sadly John was taken away by Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in June 2005.
John had the ability to touch the hearts of those he met; his passing has brought together people from a wide range of backgrounds to celebrate his life and his passion for football. Stockton’s former Mayor Suzanne Fletcher, Kath Sainsbury from Justice First, Apollinaire and Omar Barow from the African Sports Embassy, Jeff Winter Ex Premiership Referee, Dawn Eccles and Claire Mcgarvey from Football First, Mike Amos and John Toping from The Durham County FA and many others came together to honour this fine young man and last year they organised a football match which was held at Billingham Synthonia, the day was great success and a fantastic tribute to John.
The first of two events planned for this year are to be held at Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community, schools from Thornaby, Stockton and Billingham have been invited to participate in a 7 a side football tournament for male year nine pupils as part of the John Owens Trophy.
It will take place on:
Wednesday 4th July 10:00 – 3:00 pm at Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community. Eston
The second event will be held at:
Billingham Synthonia on Sunday 5th August. Entertainment 12:00pm – 3:00pm Kick off at 3:00pm
Apollinaire from the African Sports Embassy is bringing together a multi cultural team to play the Select 11 from the Durham FA Northern League.
Your Game 2008
The annual BBC Sport Your Game tournament took place recently with Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community entering 2 teams into the Newcastle heat.
The day was a fantastic mix of music, football and youth culture and brought together 32 teams making it the best attended Your Game heat to date.
The day got off to a great start seeing both teams report early wins before the early morning interval. Controversial refereeing decisions and bad luck saw both of our teams struggle in the late morning matches and fail to emerge from the group stage.
In fact both teams were so close to reaching the knock out stages, both matches were expelled with the final kick of the game.
FC Galaxy's Anth Garbutt was on the receiving end of a terrible challenge which went unpunished, the referee turning down last minute penalty appeals that would have sealed progression.
Anthony Garbutt said; "We attended last years tournament which was brilliant, the day has been really well organised and our players have done Middlesbrough proud." "These tournaments can sometimes turn into a must win event, but I am so proud that our guys have kept their heads up once we got knocked out, they stayed and supported the remaining teams and if nothing else, the sense of team spirit and grace in defeat will stay with me, as will the stud marks down my shin!"
Old star FC eventually won the mens final and will now represent the North East in the Grand Final later in the year.
Congratulations to all involved and our thanks go to the BBC Sport team who made the day a massive success.
Bring on 2009!

Jonathan Woodgate shows his support
Middlesbroughs £7m Signing from Real Madrid came into the centre straight from signing his new four year contract.
Jonathan was showing his support for the Football First programmes and checking out the three new classrooms that are in use at Eston. During his time in the centre, Jonathan talked to students, launched our website and even took part in healthy eating and I.T. sessions. Pupils from e2e, Bishopsgarth School and The Kings Academy were very happy to see the Boro defender.
Ronnie from Bishopsgarth said, "I've never met anyone famous before, he was great, I definitley want to be a footballer now.
Aaron from Kings Academy was also happy and added, "We do lots of work here but it's worth it when you get to do things like this, we got to watch the players train, we've met 'Woody' and also got to go to the Show Racism the Red Card DVD launch with the players. I can't wait to go to the match on Saturday."
Jonathan was also accompanied by Match Of The Day cameras who filmed a piece for their Sunday morning show to be aired on the 6th May.
Many thanks go to Jonathan and the BBC for making it such a great day.
